The Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has donated GHC500 to each of the stranded Kayayei (head porters) who tried sneaking out of Accra to the Northern Region but were stopped at Ejisu in the Ashanti Region.
The head porters who were about 76 in number took bold steps by sneaking out of the Nation’s Capital after the President announced a lockdown on the city in the wake of the COVID-19.
But their journey fell apart when they were discovered at Ejisu near Kumasi. They were then returned to Accra, to prevent spreading of the virus through the north and Ghana as a whole incase some of them are infected.
The Accra Metropolitan Assembly has set up a temporary shelter for them but there were still some few concerns about the upkeep.
In view of this the Vice President donated Ghc 500 to each of the 76 stranded head porters.
The donation was made on behalf of Dr. Bawumia by the Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, Hajia Alima Mahama.
The incumbent minister was accompanied by Dr. Sagare Bambangi , MP for Walewale and Mustafa Ussif, CEO of the National Service Secretariat.
