Ghanaians have blasted the PRO for the Central Regional Police Command, DSP Irene Oppong for saying the two Kasoa teenage murderers cannot be jailed for more than 5 years.
The kasoa killing has been in the headlines for almost a week now and most people are wondering what punishment will be meted out to the two boys who committed such a heinous crime.
Many Ghanaians are expecting some harsh punishment for the two but that seem to be debatable in relation to the law.
And reacting to this, the PRO for the Central Regional Police Command, DSP Irene Oppong, said the suspects cannot be jailed beyond five years due to their ages.
“In the case of a juvenile, the sentence cannot exceed five years. In some instances, they can be sentenced for only three years; and that depends on the discretion of the judge,” she said on Kumasi-based Hello FM.
“As we speak, there is no documentary evidence to prove whether their ages are 16 or 17. Therefore we are looking forward to getting their weighing cards or birth certificates. In case we do not get any of these, then the police investigator will have an expert to determine their ages.”
But this statement did not go down well with Ghanaians as they blasted the Ghana police. According to the citizens, the punishment is too small for such a serious crime.
Many were suggesting d€ath $entence or life imprisonment with hard labour.
